The test device “MT COOLANT CHECK” of Martechnic is designed for regular on-site assessment of the engine coolant quality. The innovative, patent pending measurement method eliminates the need for conventional complex physical and/or chemical analyses of individual coolant parameters (pH, chlorides, nitrite additives etc.). Instead, the coolant’s quality is characterized non-chemically and environmentally friendly by means of electrotechnical apparatus with corrosion-resistant and corrosion-prone electrodes in a simulated engine cooling system.

The “MT COOLANT CHECK” runs just one single test with a single coolant sample in fully-automated measurement process. The chlorid content in the coolant sample and the remaining corrosion protection capacity of the coolant in use in "Lagner" (Lag) is determined in about 20 minutes. In case of insufficient anti-corrosion protection detected, the accurate dosing rate of the additive to be added will be also automatically determined and displayed. Precise and timely maintenance recommendations will be offered in order to avoid unnecessary coolant changes and wastage.

Easily recyclable electrodes with no shelf-life limitations contribute to waste reduction, minimizing environmental risks, especially to marine ecosystems, thereby marking a significant stride towards sustainable predictive maintenance in the maritime industry.

The “MT COOLANT CHECK” was recognized with 2024 and 2023 Ship Technology Excellence Awards in the categories "INNOVATION" and "ENVIRONMENTAL - DECARBONIZATION".

The test kit "LUBE OIL CHECK 5" is designed for regular on-board monitoring of 5 crucial parameters of engine lube oil: water in oil, base number (BN), oil viscosity, salt water and soot contamination. Routine in-service oil analysis can help to early detect any off-specification issues (ongoing degradation of the oil quality, abnormal wear) and changes in the oil condition (oil contamination) before an actual problem occurs, thereby improving the engine system maintenance planning.

The content of water in oil and base number is measured by means of the test device "TWIN CHECK 4.0" in two identical test procedures. The concentration of water in oil can be determined in the range from 0 – 1.0 vol. % H2O and the BN value can be measured from 0 to 150 BN. The test results are directly available on the digital display of the "TWIN CHECK 4.0" unit.

Viscosity test of the used oil sample in comparison to the fresh oil sample is determined with the help of the "VISCOSITY COMPARATOR". The test result is immediately visually observable in the form of a go/no go answer.

The degree of soot concentration in the oil sample is determined by means of the "SPOT CHECK" test.

The "SALT/ FRESH WATER CHECK" helps to provide immediate confirmation whether the water-in-oil contains any salt or not.

The test device "TOTAL IRON CHECK" enables regular on-board monitoring of total, corroded and abrasive iron content in cylinder drain oil (CDO) samples. The total iron concentration (the sum of abrasive and corrosive wear) provides an indication of excessive wear and tear of the components surrounding the engine combustion chamber. The precise measurement method of Martechnic is based on the chemical reaction of iron present in cylinder lubricant in corroded or abrasive state and special reaction liquid.

With the "TOTAL IRON CHECK" it is possible to quickly and accurately determine the total iron content in CDO samples in the range from 15/20 – 1100 mg/kg. All iron particles in the CDO sample will be detected, measured and displayed irrespective of their size and the reason of iron accumulation (corrosive or abrasive). Depending on the measured iron concentration, the color of the liquid can get various shades of blue varying from light to dark. This color change can be also visually observed after the test.

The enhanced, redesigned version of the test device "TOTAL IRON CHECK" includes several updated features:

1. Upgraded navigation menu with the possibility to create individual named data slots for up to 20 different cylinders units;

2. Large memory capacity: storage of 400 measured values with date and time stamps;

3. USB to serial connection for transfer of test results into a terminal program and further into Excel or similar software.

The "FUEL AND LUBE OIL TEST CABINET" is a portable laboratory specifically designed for on-site condition monitoring of fuel, lube and hydraulic oil. The Cabinet contains all necessary test equipment for regular measurement of crucial parameters of fuels, lube and hydraulic oil in the engines systems and enables direct assessment of test results. Any occurring changes in the oil condition are immediately observable, and the respective adequate measures regarding maintenance and services can be taken at the exact time when it is necessary.

The "FUEL AND LUBE OIL TEST CABINET" includes 8 different tests: water-in-oil, base number (BN), go/ no go oil viscosity comparison, determination of density and viscosity value based on the falling ball principle, soot and salt water contamination as well as stability and /or compatibility of fuel oils.

The content of water in oil and base number (BN) is measured by means of the test device "TWIN CHECK 4.0" in two identical test procedures. The test device "VISCO DENS PLUS" enables determination of two oil parameters: viscosity and density in a single test procedure. Density of the heated oil sample at 50?C is defined with the help of hydrometer. The measured value is automatically converted to standard temperature of 15?C. The method for measuring viscosity is based on the falling ball principle in the heated oil sample.

The degree of soot concentration in the oil sample is determined by means of the "SPOT CHECK" test.

The "SALT/ FRESH WATER CHECK" helps to provide immediate confirmation whether the water-in-oil contains any salt or not.

The test device "COMPATIBILITY CHECK" has been designed for regular monitoring of the fuel oil quality delivered on board a vessel. Easy and quick tests directly after delivery enable determination of stability and/or compatibility of fuel oil and consequently prevention of the blockage of filters and pipes of the engine system.

The "FUEL AND LUBE OIL TEST CABINET" is of rugged design and compact size and can be easily mounted to a wall. The Cabinet has a built-in lightning and a folding test desk to perform oil and bunker fuel testing easily and quickly.

Catalyst fines or cat fines (Al and Si compounds) are hard abrasive particles that are used to assist in catalytic cracking technology during intensive refining and blending processes of heavy fuel oil. It can happen that these particles remain in the bunker fuel. Due to their scouring action, cat fines are regarded as potential risk for ship engines.

The test kit "MT CAT FINES CHECK" has been designed for easy, quick and accurate determination of cat fines concentrations in heavy fuel oil. Regular verification of cat fines amounts is recommended before and after on-board handling and treatment measures in fuel oil treatment unit as well as prior to using the fuel oil for engine operation. All types of bunker fuel can be tested including VLSFO, ULSFO and HSFO.

The test kit is specifically useful for regular on-board pre-consumption fuel oil analysis. Effective management of fuel oil quality on board includes checking cat fines concentrations before purification in separators and directly after the fuel oil treatment in separators as it is the crucial role of the separators to reduce cat fines content to the lowest extent possible (recommended maximum of 15 mg/kg (ppm)) before the engine inlet. Therefore, this “double-check” strategy helps to regularly estimate the cleaning efficiency of the separators.

The fuel oil samples prepared with relevant reagents and then centrifuged are ready for immediate quantitative evaluation of cat fines concentration. The amounts of cat fines detected in the samples are assessed visually in accordance with the below comparison chart included in the test kit "MT CAT FINES CHECK".

As the test kit is simple to use and no special training is required, the ship’s operators can easily employ it for cat fines verification on board a vessel with regard to the concerns that various types and/or grades of VLSFOs can potentially raise. Regular on-board monitoring of cat fines concentrations can substantially reduce the risk of experiencing engine wear and tear problems related to cat fines and their possible abnormal levels in new formulations of VLSFOs.

The VISCOSITY & DENSITY SENSOR is a newly developed compact sensor for inline condition monitoring of three parameters: viscosity, mass density and temperature. Accurate continuous simultaneous measurement of viscosity and density enables optimization of lubrication of various engine parts, minimization of wear and increase of engine efficiency. The VISCOSITY & DENSITY SENSOR is designed as a screw-in and immersion sensor with outstanding performance
achieved by combining a resonator evaluation technology with a robust and reliable quartz crystal tuning fork resonator. The wide-range of application areas of the SENSOR include lube and hydraulic oil condition monitoring, fuel quality control, analysis of process media and monitoring of mixing processes.

The VISCOSITY & DENSITY SENSOR features extended viscosity range, increased accuracy and high sampling rates. Due to the high measurement rate, excellent data quality can be obtained even in unsteady environmental conditions (pressure, temperature, flow, vibration). The SENSOR offers digital and configurable analog interfaces for easy and cost-effective integration into existing environments. As the measured parameters are continuously processed and stored, it is easy to evaluate the relevant values and recognize any potentially occurring deviations from standard
specifications. High-sensitivity and long-term stability of the sensor system allow individual setting of a lower warning threshold to provide proper corrective actions at an early stage. Therefore, the costs of maintenance can be decreased and maintenance and oil change intervals could be prolonged. The VISCOSITY & DENSITY SENSOR helps to remain confident about the condition of oil all the time.

The test kit MT UREA CHECK is designed for regular on-board quality monitoring of urea-based marine diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) AUS 40. The operating additive AUS 40 (aqueous urea solution at 40 % concentration) is usually used for diesel engines with SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system to significantly reduce harmful NOx (nitrous oxides) emissions produced during diesel combustion processes.

The proper concentration of urea in AUS 40 is crucial for optimal performance of the SCR system. The ideal concentration of urea in % by weight for diesel-powered ship engines is determined in accordance with the specifications of an original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The prolonged storage of AUS 40 and high temperatures can lead to its gradual decomposition and thus have a negative effect on the urea concentration.

The test kit MT UREA CHECK can help to assess the quality of marine diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) AUS 40 in accordance with ISO 18611-1:2014 and to determine the following possible error sources:

1. Technical deviating specifications
2. Thermal instability (shelf life)
3. Dilution (possibly chemical contamination)

The AHHOI – Infrared Water-in-Oil Sensor is a technical development of Martechnic® in the area of the in-line oil quality monitoring designed for accurate real-time assessment. Based on the IR principle, the sensor measures continuously the content of water in lubricants of different origin and can be employed for various application systems (diesel engines, gearboxes and hydraulic systems). In comparison to other existing in-line water monitoring systems, the infrared technology of the AHHOI Sensor provides a crucial advantage, namely it enables determination
of water in all three states: saturated, emulsified and free.

The AHHOI Sensor is installed according to the bypass method: thereby it can be integrated on-site and connected to the lubricating oil system of the engine with a pressure ranging from 1 to 10 bars. As the sensor should be operated at a constant pressure of 1 bar, the integrated valve of the device helps to constantly maintain the pressure at the same level. The AHHOI requires a pressure free outlet (atmospheric drain) and incorporates a flush through system for cleaning, while the in-built oil filter protects the measuring cell of the sensor system.

Before starting to measure the degree of water concentration, the sensor needs to get pre-calibrated for a particular oil grade in use. The content of water then can be continuously measured in molecular form up to 10000 ppm / 1.0 vol. %.

The system is housed in a A3 sized IP 54 steel box and requires 100 - 240 V and has both serial and analogue outlets (0 - 20 / 4 - 20 mA) available.

The corresponding software for data recording in the framework of trend analysis is provided by Martechnic®.

Water in oil is, has been, and will be omnipresent threat to any mineral oil application, and base number (BN) is a crucial parameter for diesel engines. The test device TWIN CHECK 4.0 has been both developed and designed to achieve immediate indication on the oil condition on site as well as continuous trending of it in daily operation.

The TWIN CHECK 4.0 provides the benifits of digitalization concept in a customer-friendly way including easy-to-use navigation menu, optimized measurement procedures, automatic data recording and storing, USB to serial connection (terminal program) for accurate trend analysis etc.

The modular design of the TWIN CHECK 4.0 enables easy cost-effective replacement of constituent parts (no matter plugged or screwed) directly on site in the case of malfunction or damaged occurred.

The interchangeable parts of the TWIN CHECK 4.0 include a display in conjunction with a mainboard, a cable connection between the mainboard and pressure transmitter (pressure
sensor), 9V block battery, a cable connection to the battery, USB cable and a reaction vessel.

The COMPA DENS CHECK integrates three important test methods (density, compatibility and stability) to assess the quality of various oil types upon delivery. As fuel is paid by weight and delivered in volume, the key parameter of oil to be checked is its density. The test kit enables the accurate density determination for light and heavy fuel oils as well as lubricant and hydraulic oils. Other significant parameters to be measured are stability/ compatibility of marine heavy fuel oil (high sulphur and low sulphur fuel oil) and marine gas oil (MGO) that are blended and used
as bunker fuel. Due to incompatibility sludge formation can occur, and the normal engine operation can be put at risk. Consequently, the relevant compatibility/ stability test analysis provides clear evidence whether the oil samples can be mixed or not.

Density of the relevant oil sample is measured in a quick and simple test procedure. The glass tube filled with oil is placed in the heating bath and is heated up to 50 °C. Once the temperature is stable, the oil density can be assessed by employing the appropriate hydrometer. The obtained density value is automatically converted to standard temperature of 15 °C. When the exact density of the oil sample is determined, the actual weight of the bunker fuel can be calculated.

As the bunker fuel delivered on board contains a mixture of different fuel blends, it is necessary to check it for stability. It is important to identify whether asphaltene precipitations will occur because of the low aromaticity or solvent capacity of the fuel or not.

The following simple test method is developed to assess the compatibility/ stability of different bunker fuels before mixing them in the same tank. Two samples are mixed together and heated up to 95 °C in the heating bath. One drop of this heated mixture is applied on chromatographic SPOT TEST paper. As soon as the formed spot dries out, the end-result can be directly analyzed.

On the one hand, it can happen that the delivered mineral oil does not correspond to the original specifications. Due to security precautions the international regulations establish the minimum flash point of 60 °C for fuels to be used on board. On the other hand, in the process of operation the flash point of oil can be significantly shifted (e.g., in case of light fuel oil dilution). Therefore, the FLASH POINT CHECK test device is specifically developed to enable regular verification of the flash point, namely the lowest temperature required to build a flammable vapor above a fluid.
Thereby, it is possible to identify possibly hazardous liquids in due time.

The simple test procedure starts when the oil is filled into the cup and the device is placed on the heating source. The oil sample has to be slowly heated up to the temperature of about 20 °C below the expected flash point and stirred from time to time. Afterwards, the sample is checked for inflammability with one degree temperature increase interval by pressing the ignition device down. As soon as the inflammation of gas occurs, the exact flash point is detected and the corresponding temperature is directly observable on the thermometer.

Regular monitoring of the bunker fuel quality either on-site with the help of portable test devices or relying on the laboratory analyses implies sampling of the fuel oil throughout the delivery, i.e. during the bunkering process. In this context, one of the conditions to obtain accurate and reliable test results is the necessity to draw a representative fuel oil sample. In accordance with the MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI Martechnic® offers a manual-valve setting continuous DRIP SAMPLER to provide the cost-effective way to collect representative primary bunker fuel samples. The
cubitainer is directly attached to the sampler and secured through a uniquely numbered seal strip in order to prevent tampering throughout the entire bunkering. At the same time the manual valve operation is not restricted and it is possible to control the flow rate of the sample.

To select the suitable model of the DRIP SAMPLER, the following basic parameters have to be taken into consideration:
1. outer diameter; 2. pitch circle diameter; 3. bolt hole diameter.
